Hill Stations Near Bangalore: Which One to Choose
Bangalore sits close enough to the Western Ghats that a hill weekend is genuinely easy: coffee country starts at four hours, and the nearest hill is an hour away. The differences between them matter more than the distances, since a coffee estate weekend and an Ooty weekend are not the same trip.
Distances are approximate road distances from central Bangalore.
The options at a glance
| Hill station | Distance | Altitude | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nandi Hills | about 60 km | 1,478 m | Sunrise, a morning trip rather than a stay |
| Horsley Hills | about 145 km | 1,265 m | Small, quiet, easy first hill trip |
| Yercaud | about 215 km | 1,515 m | Coffee hills without Ooty's crowds |
| Sakleshpur | about 220 km | 950 m | Estate stays, green and low-key |
| Chikmagalur | about 240 km | 1,930 m at Mullayanagiri | Coffee, trekking and the highest peak in Karnataka |
| Coorg (Madikeri) | about 255 km | 1,525 m | The most to do, and the most visitors |
| Ooty | about 270 km | 2,240 m | Classic hill station, coldest of the group |
| Wayanad | about 270 km | 700 to 2,100 m | Forest, waterfalls and wildlife |
| Kodaikanal | about 465 km | 2,133 m | Worth it only for a long weekend |
If you have one night
Nandi Hills as a morning trip, or Horsley Hills and Sakleshpur for a genuine overnight. Sakleshpur's estate homestays are the best value on this list.
If you have two nights
Coorg, Chikmagalur or Yercaud. Coorg has waterfalls, coffee tours and the most restaurants; Chikmagalur is better for trekking; Yercaud is the quietest of the three.
If you want a proper hill station
Ooty, which is colder, higher and more developed than anything else within range, with the toy train from Mettupalayam as the reason to go.
If you want forest rather than hills
Wayanad. It's greener, wetter and better for wildlife, and it pairs well with a stop in Coorg on the way.
When to go
| Season | What to expect |
|---|---|
| October to February | The best season across the board: dry roads, clear mornings, comfortable nights. |
| March to May | The hills stay pleasant while Bangalore doesn't, so this is peak season for Coorg, Chikmagalur and Ooty. |
| June to September | Coffee country is at its most beautiful and its most difficult: heavy rain, slippery ghat roads and leeches in Coorg and Wayanad. Waterfalls are at their peak. |
| Long weekends | Coorg, Ooty and Chikmagalur sell out weeks ahead and the ghat roads crawl. Sakleshpur, Yercaud and Horsley Hills stay manageable. |

Practical notes
- Estate homestays in Coorg and Chikmagalur often have patchy mobile signal; download maps before you leave the highway.
- Ooty and Coorg roads on a Sunday evening are slow. Leaving at dawn beats leaving after lunch.
- Leeches are a genuine nuisance in Coorg and Wayanad during the monsoon; salt and closed shoes help.
- Nandi Hills has vehicle entry limits and a queue from before dawn at weekends.
- For non-hill options at similar distances, see our weekend getaways from Bangalore guide.
