Hill Stations Near Delhi: Which One to Choose
Delhi is closer to the Himalayan foothills than any other Indian metro, which is both the appeal and the problem: every hill station within six hours is busy on a long weekend. The choice really comes down to how far you'll drive and how many people you're willing to share the view with.
Distances are approximate road distances from central Delhi.
The options at a glance
| Hill station | Distance | Altitude | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Morni Hills | about 270 km | 1,220 m | The nearest genuine hills, and the quietest |
| Lansdowne | about 250 km | 1,700 m | A small cantonment town, very quiet |
| Mussoorie | about 280 km | 2,000 m | The classic choice, busiest on weekends |
| Dhanaulti | about 300 km | 2,280 m | Quieter alternative near Mussoorie |
| Nainital | about 300 km | 2,080 m | Lake town, crowded in summer |
| Kasauli | about 290 km | 1,800 m | Pine walks, no real sightseeing, that's the point |
| Shimla | about 340 km | 2,200 m | The most to do, and the most traffic |
| Chail | about 350 km | 2,250 m | Higher and calmer than Shimla, 45 minutes away |
| Mukteshwar | about 350 km | 2,285 m | Orchards and long views, little crowd |
| Ranikhet | about 360 km | 1,870 m | Army town, golf course, pine forest |
If you have one night
Lansdowne or Kasauli. Both are about five to six hours away, small enough to walk around, and neither needs an itinerary. Kasauli in particular works well when you want to do nothing.
If you have two nights
Mussoorie, Nainital or Shimla, all of which have enough to fill a weekend. If the crowds put you off, take the quieter neighbour instead: Dhanaulti rather than Mussoorie, Chail rather than Shimla, Mukteshwar rather than Nainital.
If you want the least crowded option
Morni Hills, Mukteshwar or Ranikhet. None of them has a Mall Road, which is precisely why they stay calm.
If you're going with parents or small children
Nainital and Shimla, where you can park once and walk, and where medical help is nearby. Steep hill towns like Mussoorie's Landour are harder work than they look.
When to go
| Season | What to expect |
|---|---|
| March to June | Peak season. Pleasant temperatures, full hotels, and traffic jams on the approach roads at weekends. |
| July to September | Green and cheap, but landslides can close hill roads and views disappear into cloud for days. |
| October to November | The best window: clear skies, visible snow peaks, and far fewer people. |
| December to February | Cold, with snow at Shimla, Chail, Dhanaulti and Mussoorie in a good year. Book a room with a heater and check road conditions. |

Practical notes
- Leave Delhi before 6am. The Dehradun and Haridwar highways jam by mid-morning at weekends.
- Check road conditions before travelling in the monsoon; hill roads close at short notice after heavy rain.
- Snow is not guaranteed anywhere in December, and chains or a 4x4 may be needed if it does fall.
- Many hill hotels are old buildings with limited heating; ask specifically rather than assuming.
