Best Time for a Honeymoon in India: Month by Month

Wedding dates in India cluster around a handful of months, which means most couples choose a honeymoon destination around fixed dates rather than choosing dates around a destination. This guide works the same way: start with when you're travelling, then pick where.

Seasons vary year to year, so treat these as the usual pattern rather than a promise.

Month by month

Month Where to go Where to avoid
January Goa, Kerala, Andaman, Rajasthan, Rann of Kutch High Himalaya, blocked passes
February Goa, Kerala, Udaipur, Andaman, Meghalaya Nothing much; the best month overall
March Rajasthan, Sikkim, Darjeeling, Andaman Plains start heating up late in the month
April Kashmir (tulips), Himachal, Uttarakhand Rajasthan, Goa: hot
May Kashmir, Himachal, Sikkim, Ooty, Munnar Most of the plains and the coast
June Ladakh opens, Himachal, Uttarakhand Coast and plains: monsoon and heat
July Ladakh, Spiti, Kerala for Ayurveda Himalayan foothills: landslides
August Ladakh, Spiti, Kerala Uttarakhand and Himachal hill roads
September Meghalaya, Ladakh, Kashmir, Coorg Kerala coast, still wet
October Almost everywhere: Rajasthan, Kerala, Sikkim, Goa Very little
November Goa, Andaman, Kerala, Rajasthan, Meghalaya High-altitude passes closing
December Andaman, Goa, Kerala, Kutch, snow in Manali and Auli Ladakh and Spiti: extreme cold

Winter, November to February

The widest choice of the year. The coast and the plains are at their best, so Goa, the Andamans, Kerala and Rajasthan all work, and hotel rates are at their highest over Christmas and New Year. If you want snow, Manali, Auli and Gulmarg have it in January and February, though snowfall varies.

Spring, March to May

The hills take over as the plains heat up. Kashmir is the standout: the tulip garden in Srinagar opens for a few weeks in April, and Gulmarg and Pahalgam are green rather than white. Sikkim and Darjeeling are at their clearest in spring, with rhododendrons in bloom.

Summer and monsoon, June to September

Ladakh's season, and the only months when the passes are reliably open. Spiti too, though both need a couple of days to acclimatise. Elsewhere it rains: the Kerala monsoon is the traditional season for Ayurvedic treatment and hotels cost noticeably less, while Himalayan foothill roads are the ones to avoid because of landslides.

Post-monsoon, September to November

The best-value window of the year. Meghalaya after the rains is green with the waterfalls still running and almost nobody there. Coorg, Chikmagalur and Wayanad are at their greenest. Rates drop from the summer peak before rising again for the winter season.

If your wedding date is fixed

The practical approach: pick the region that matches your month, then choose within it.

  • Winter wedding: Andamans, Kerala or Rajasthan.
  • Spring wedding: Kashmir or Sikkim.
  • Summer wedding: Ladakh, Himachal or Uttarakhand.
  • Monsoon wedding: Kerala for Ayurveda, or wait and travel in September to Meghalaya.

Gifting a honeymoon stay

If you're contributing to someone's honeymoon rather than taking one, a stay voucher lets the couple choose the hotel and the dates, and stays valid for 12 months.

Planning notes

  • Book December and January travel two to three months ahead; it's peak season for the whole country.
  • September and early October are the best combination of weather and price almost everywhere.
  • Check pass opening dates before planning Ladakh or Spiti in June; they vary with the snow.
  • Kashmir's tulip garden opens for roughly two to three weeks in April and dates are announced each year.
  • Hotel rates over Christmas and New Year can be double the shoulder-season rate, and minimum-night rules often apply.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time for a honeymoon in India?
February and October are the two most flexible months, with good weather across most of the country.

Kashmir, Himachal, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, Ooty and Munnar. Avoid the coast and the plains.

Is the monsoon a bad time to honeymoon?
Not if you choose correctly. Ladakh and Spiti are at their best, Kerala is cheaper and the Ayurveda season, and Meghalaya in September is excellent.
