What Is a Staycation? The Meaning, and Why People Book Them

A staycation is a holiday you take without travelling far: either at home, or at a hotel in or near your own city. The word combines "stay" and "vacation", and it came into wide use during periods when long-distance travel was expensive or difficult. It has stuck because it turns out a night somewhere else in your own city does most of what a holiday does, at a fraction of the cost and effort.

What counts as a staycation

Type What it looks like
Hotel staycation A night or two at a hotel in your own city, usually with breakfast, pool and spa access
Near-city staycation A resort an hour or two away: close enough to drive after work
At-home staycation Time off spent at home, with the phone off and plans made deliberately
Day-use staycation A hotel room booked for the day rather than the night, increasingly common in Indian cities

Staycation vs holiday vs weekend getaway

Staycation Weekend getaway Holiday
Distance In your city or very close Up to a few hours' drive Anywhere
Travel time Under an hour Two to five hours A day or more
Typical length One or two nights Two nights Four nights and up
Planning needed Almost none Some A lot
Cost driver The room Room plus fuel Flights

Why people book them

  • No travel day. A two-night trip four hours away gives you one real day. Two nights in your own city gives you two.
  • No flights. The single biggest cost of any holiday disappears.
  • Short notice works. You can decide on Thursday and go on Friday.
  • The facilities get used. Pool, spa and breakfast are the point, rather than something you skip because you're out sightseeing.
  • It suits short leave. One day off, or none at all, is enough.

Are staycations worth it?

The honest answer: yes when you pick a hotel that's actually different from your daily life, and no when you don't. A business hotel ten minutes from your office with no pool is a room, not a holiday. A property with a pool, a decent breakfast and a view changes how the weekend feels. Choose on facilities, not on distance or brand.

The second thing that decides it is whether you leave the hotel. The point of a staycation is that you don't have to.

How to get more out of one

  • Check in early, check out late. Ask at booking; many hotels will oblige at weekends, and it can add half a day.
  • Pick a hotel with a pool. It's the facility most likely to make the stay feel like a holiday.
  • Book somewhere you'd never usually stay. The other side of the city, or the hotel you drive past every day.
  • Leave the laptop. Being in your own city makes it easy to answer one email and lose the evening.
  • Eat in. Room service and a hotel breakfast are part of what you're paying for.

What it costs

City hotels are usually cheapest at weekends, because their weekday guests are business travellers. That's the opposite of hill and beach destinations, and it's what makes a city staycation good value: you're buying a Friday or Saturday night at a discount.

Booking one, or gifting it

Stay vouchers let you or the recipient pick the hotel and the dates, and stay valid for 12 months.
