Luxury and Boutique Stays in India: How to Choose
"Luxury" covers two quite different things in India. One is a five-star city hotel: consistent, well-staffed, everything works. The other is a boutique property with twelve rooms, a view and no gym. Both cost real money, and which is right depends entirely on why you're going.
The main types, compared
| Type | Typical size | Strength | Weakness |
|---|---|---|---|
| Five-star city hotel | 150 to 400 rooms | Reliability, service, location, facilities | Can feel anonymous |
| Boutique hotel | 8 to 40 rooms | Character, design, personal service | Fewer facilities, variable standards |
| Palace or heritage hotel | Varies widely | The building itself | Lifts, cooling and room variation |
| Plantation bungalow or homestay | 4 to 12 rooms | Setting and food, often the best meals you'll eat | Remote, limited signal |
| Houseboat | 1 to 3 bedrooms | A genuinely different night | One night is usually enough |
| Resort | 60 to 200 rooms | Pools, spa, activities, families | You may never leave, which is the point or isn't |
Choose by the trip, not the category
- A city break: a five-star hotel, for the location and the ability to get things done. Our weekend getaway guides cover where to go from each metro.
- A weekend in the hills: a boutique property or a plantation bungalow. Coorg, Chikmagalur, Munnar and Wayanad all have them, and the food is usually better than a resort's.
- An anniversary: a heritage or palace stay, where the building does the work. See our Rajasthan heritage guide.
- A first trip with family: a resort, where everyone can do different things without leaving.
- A honeymoon: a boutique property with a view, and fewer moves between hotels. See our honeymoon guide.
Where each kind is strongest
- Five-star city hotels: Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Kolkata, where business travel keeps standards high and weekend rates drop.
- Boutique stays: Goa, Pondicherry, Udaipur, the Nilgiris and the Himalayan foothills.
- Plantation bungalows: Coorg, Chikmagalur, Munnar, Wayanad and the Assam tea estates.
- Houseboats: Alleppey and Kumarakom in Kerala, and Srinagar's Dal Lake.
- Desert and wilderness camps: Jaisalmer, the Rann of Kutch in winter, and the tiger reserves.
What actually makes a stay feel expensive
In practice it comes down to four things, and only one of them is the room rate.
- The view and the outlook. A cheaper room facing something worth looking at beats an expensive one facing a corridor.
- Staff-to-room ratio. This is why a twelve-room property can feel more looked-after than a 300-room one.
- Breakfast. Included or not, and whether it's a buffet or cooked to order, changes the whole morning.
- Quiet. Road noise and wedding functions undo everything else. Ask about both.
Weekday and weekend rates
City hotels are cheapest at weekends, because their weekday guests are on business. Leisure destinations are the opposite: Coorg, Lonavala and Mussoorie cost more from Friday to Sunday. If your dates are flexible, a Sunday-to-Tuesday hill trip or a Friday-to-Sunday city stay can be substantially cheaper for the same property.

Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between a luxury hotel and a boutique hotel?
Size and consistency. A five-star hotel offers reliable service and full facilities; a boutique property offers character and personal attention with fewer facilities.
Are boutique hotels cheaper?
Not necessarily. The best ones match five-star rates. What differs is what you get for the money: setting and personality rather than room service and a gym.
When are five-star hotels cheapest?
At weekends in the big cities, and midweek in leisure destinations.
Is a plantation bungalow worth it?
For two nights in coffee or tea country, yes. Meals are usually included and are often the best part of the stay.
