Thai Spas and Thai Massage in India: What You're Actually Booking
"Thai spa" is one of the most common spa names in India, and one of the most misleading. Traditional Thai massage is done on a mat, fully clothed, with no oil, and involves the therapist using pressure and assisted stretching to move your body through positions. Most Indian spas with "Thai" in the name offer an oil massage on a table instead.
Neither is wrong, but they're different treatments, and it's worth knowing which one you're booking.
Traditional Thai massage vs the oil massage most spas offer
| Traditional Thai | Oil massage at a Thai-branded spa | |
|---|---|---|
| Where | On a floor mat | On a massage table |
| Clothing | Loose clothes, provided | Undressed, covered with a towel |
| Oil | None | Yes |
| Technique | Compression, thumb pressure, assisted stretching | Gliding strokes and kneading |
| How it feels | Like being stretched and worked on | Relaxing |
| Best for | Stiffness and mobility | Unwinding |
How to check before you book
Ask the spa two questions: is it on a mat or a table, and is oil used? If the answer is table and oil, it's an oil massage whatever the menu calls it. That's fine if relaxation is what you want, and not what you want if you came for the stretching.
What to book
- Royal Thai Spa Bangalore, 60-minute aromatherapy and Swedish massage — ₹3,125, an oil treatment in a Thai-style spa
- Four Fountains Indiranagar, Bangalore — ₹1,930 for a straightforward hour
- Zivaya Spa at Le Méridien Gurgaon — ₹4,500
- Panghat Spa at Jagmandir Palace, Udaipur — ₹3,999, if the setting matters more than the technique
If you want the real thing
- Look for the words "traditional Thai", "dry massage" or "mat" in the description.
- Expect to be asked to change into loose trousers and a top.
- Allow 90 minutes. An hour is short for a full Thai sequence.
- Tell the therapist about knee, hip or back problems beforehand, since the stretches move those joints.
Frequently asked questions
What is Thai massage?
A clothed, oil-free treatment on a mat using compression, pressure points and assisted stretching.
Is Thai massage painful?
It can be intense during the stretches, but it should not hurt. Tell the therapist to ease off if it does.
Why do so many Indian spas have "Thai" in the name?
It signals a style of spa rather than the treatment itself. Check whether the massage is on a mat without oil if the technique matters to you.
Thai or Swedish?
Thai for stiffness and mobility, Swedish for relaxation.
