Weekend Getaways from Delhi NCR: Where to Go, by Distance

Delhi has two directions for a weekend: north into the hills, or south-west into Rajasthan. The hills are cooler and busier; Rajasthan has the forts, the tigers and better winter weather.

Distances are approximate road distances from central Delhi. Friday evening out of NCR adds at least an hour whichever way you go.

Under 150 km: a Saturday away

  • Damdama Lake, about 50 km. Closest option, good for a day out.
  • Neemrana, about 120 km. Fort-palace stay, the easiest heritage night from Delhi.
  • Vrindavan and Mathura, about 150 km. Temples and ghats.
  • Sariska, about 200 km. Tiger reserve on the Rajasthan side.

150 to 280 km: the standard two-night trip

  • Alwar, about 160 km. Forts, lakes and fewer tourists than Jaipur.
  • Bharatpur, about 185 km. Bird sanctuary, at its best in winter.
  • Haridwar, about 215 km. The Ganga, the evening aarti.
  • Agra, about 230 km. The Taj, best at sunrise before the crowds.
  • Rishikesh, about 240 km. Rafting, yoga, riverside camps.
  • Jim Corbett, about 250 km. Safaris and forest lodges.
  • Lansdowne, about 250 km. Small, quiet cantonment hill town.
  • Jaipur, about 270 km. Forts, palaces and the best food on this list.
  • Mussoorie, about 280 km. The classic Delhi hill station.

280 km and beyond: take Monday off

  • Kasauli, about 290 km. Quieter than Shimla, pine forest walks.
  • Nainital, about 300 km. Lake town, crowded in summer.
  • Shimla, about 340 km. Mall Road and toy train.
  • Chail, about 350 km. Higher and quieter than Shimla nearby.

When to go

Season What works
October to March Best for Rajasthan, Agra and the plains. Bharatpur and Sariska are at their best now.
April to June Go up: Mussoorie, Kasauli, Nainital, Shimla and Chail. Delhi heat makes anything low uncomfortable.
July to September Rishikesh rafting pauses in peak monsoon, and hill roads can be blocked by landslides. Corbett's core zones close during the monsoon.
Long weekends Mussoorie, Nainital and Shimla fill up and the roads back on Sunday are slow. Neemrana, Lansdowne and Alwar are the better picks.

Turning a weekend away into a gift

Every stay here is a voucher: the recipient picks the hotel and the dates, and it stays valid for 12 months. That makes it work as an anniversary or birthday gift when you don't know their calendar.

Planning notes

  • Leave before 6am on Saturday if you're heading north; the Delhi to Dehradun and Haridwar stretches jam by mid-morning.
  • Corbett safari permits are separate from the hotel and sell out well before rooms do.
  • Hill roads are worse after heavy rain; check conditions before driving to Mussoorie or Shimla in the monsoon.
  • Neemrana and other fort hotels take one booking per room category and fill fast at weekends.
