Hotel Gift Cards and Stay Vouchers in India: How They Compare
There are two ways to gift a hotel stay in India. One is a gift card from a hotel chain, redeemable across that brand's properties. The other is a stay voucher covering hotels from many different brands. They work differently, and which is better depends almost entirely on the person receiving it.
How each works
| Hotel chain gift card | Multi-hotel stay voucher | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it's used | That chain's hotels and restaurants | A list of hotels across many brands |
| What it covers | A cash value against the bill | A specific stay, usually a night with breakfast |
| Choice | Wide within one brand | Wide across brands, fixed on what's included |
| Top-up | They pay the difference if the bill is higher | They pay for upgrades and extras |
| Best for | Someone loyal to one chain | Someone you don't know that well |
When a chain gift card is the right choice
If the person already stays with one group, a gift card from that brand is the better gift: it fits their habits, it works at the restaurants as well as the rooms, and it can be topped up against a bigger bill. Hotel groups in India that sell them include the major domestic chains, and some are also sold through card-issuer reward programmes.
Two things to check on the issuer's own site before buying: the validity period, and whether it can be redeemed at restaurants and spas or only against rooms. Both vary by brand and change from time to time.
When a stay voucher is the better choice
A voucher is the better answer in the common case: you want to gift a night away, and you don't know which hotel group they like or which city they'll be in. It covers a defined stay rather than a cash amount, so the gift is a night away rather than a discount on one.

- Luxury Getaways, stay with breakfast at 600+ hotels — ₹9,499
- Charming Stays, Castle & Palace Staycation at 700+ hotels — ₹7,999

Vouchers with something attached
The versions that include a dinner or a massage tend to land better as gifts, because they give the recipient a plan rather than a booking to make.
- One night with a romantic dinner for two — ₹11,999
- One night with a couples massage — ₹13,499
- Gourmet Staycations, stay with fine dining — ₹10,999
- Relaxing Escapes, spa and wellness stay — ₹13,999
What to check before you buy either
- Validity. Ours run 12 months; chain cards vary, so check the issuer's terms.
- Coverage in their city. A voucher covering 1,200 hotels is only useful if some are near them.
- What's included. Usually the room and breakfast. Taxes, upgrades, meals and extras are normally paid at the hotel.
- Blackout dates. Ask about Christmas, New Year and long weekends, when availability is tightest anywhere.
- Booking notice. Weekend rooms at popular properties need a few weeks, not a few days.
Which to gift, by recipient
| Recipient | Best choice |
|---|---|
| Parents | A luxury stay voucher; five-star hotels are the safe assumption |
| A couple, for an anniversary | A stay with a dinner or a couples massage attached |
| A colleague or a thank you | A single-night voucher rather than a cash-value card |
| Someone loyal to one hotel group | That group's own gift card |
| Newly married couple | A honeymoon or romantic stay voucher |
