Hill Stations Near Mumbai: Which One to Choose

Mumbai's hill stations are lower than the Himalayan ones and closer than almost anything else in India: Lonavala is under two hours on a clear run. What makes them different is the monsoon, which is their peak season rather than their off season, when the ghats turn green and every cliff carries a waterfall.

Distances are approximate road distances from south Mumbai.

The options at a glance

Hill station Distance Altitude Best for
Khandala about 80 km 625 m The quickest escape from the city
Lonavala about 85 km 622 m The default, busiest at weekends
Matheran about 85 km 800 m No vehicles allowed, quiet by design
Igatpuri about 120 km 600 m Green and low-key, best in the monsoon
Malshej Ghat about 130 km 700 m Waterfalls and flamingos in season
Bhandardara about 165 km 750 m Lake, stars and camping
Panchgani about 245 km 1,334 m Table land, quieter than its neighbour
Mahabaleshwar about 260 km 1,353 m The highest and most developed of the group
Saputara about 250 km 1,000 m Gujarat's only hill station, rarely crowded

If you have one night

Lonavala, Khandala or Karjat. All are close enough to leave after work on Friday, and Lonavala has the most places to stay, if also the most people.

If you want quiet

Matheran, where no vehicles are allowed past Dasturi and you walk, ride or take the toy train. Igatpuri and Saputara are the other two that stay calm on a long weekend.

If you have two nights

Mahabaleshwar or Panchgani. Mahabaleshwar has the viewpoints and the strawberry farms; Panchgani is smaller and less hectic, with the table land as its centrepiece.

If you want water

Bhandardara for the lake and the night sky, or Malshej Ghat in the monsoon when the waterfalls run upward in the wind.

When to go

Season What to expect
June to September Peak season. The ghats are green, the waterfalls run, and rooms cost more and book out earlier than in winter.
October to February Dry, clear and comfortable, and the best window for Mahabaleshwar and Panchgani.
March to May Hot below 1,000 m. Mahabaleshwar and Panchgani hold their temperature; Lonavala doesn't.
Long weekends Lonavala and Mahabaleshwar fill completely and the expressway backs up. Matheran, Igatpuri and Saputara are the better picks.

Booking the stay

Hill station rooms are the part that sells out, not the drive. If you're gifting the trip rather than taking it, these are vouchers: the recipient chooses the hotel and the dates, valid for 12 months.

Practical notes

  • Monsoon is high season here, so book earlier rather than later between June and September.
  • Matheran allows no cars: park at Dasturi and walk about 3 km, take a horse, or use the toy train when it runs.
  • The Mumbai to Pune Expressway is fastest and slowest at predictable times: leave before 7am or after 9pm on Friday.
  • Ghat roads get slippery in heavy rain and visibility drops sharply; drive them in daylight.
