Ayurvedic Massage: Treatments, Prices and Where to Book in India
Ayurvedic massage is a treatment system rather than a spa service. It uses warm medicated oils chosen for your constitution, follows set sequences, and is usually recommended as a course rather than a one-off. It also costs less than a spa massage in most Indian cities, because it isn't selling the room.
The main treatments, explained
| Treatment | What it is |
|---|---|
| Abhyanga | The standard full-body oil massage, with rhythmic strokes following the direction of the body's channels |
| Marma | Focused work on marma points, the pressure points of Ayurvedic medicine, rather than general muscle work |
| Shirodhara | A steady stream of warm oil poured across the forehead; usually booked for sleep and stress |
| Panchakarma | A multi-day cleansing programme of which massage is one part, done at a centre under supervision |
| Padabhyanga | Foot massage using oil and marma points |
What to expect at an Ayurvedic centre
- A consultation first about your constitution, sleep, digestion and any complaints.
- Generous warm oil. Bring a hair tie and don't plan anything formal straight after.
- A slower pace than a spa massage, and a warm room.
- A clinical setting rather than a spa one at genuine Panchakarma centres, which is a good sign, not a bad one.
- Advice at the end, often about diet or routine. It's part of the treatment, not a sales pitch.

Practical notes
- Kerala's monsoon months, June to August, are traditionally considered the best season for Ayurvedic treatment.
- Avoid a heavy meal in the two hours beforehand.
- Tell the practitioner about medication, pregnancy or medical conditions at the consultation.
- Ayurvedic treatment supports general wellbeing; it isn't a substitute for medical care for a diagnosed condition.
